Northern Power Grid, working through its subsidiary electricity distribution companies, NEDL and YEDL, operate and maintain the electricity distribution network that delivers electricity to more than 3.8 million premises. The network consists of more than 67,000 substations, around 29,000 km of overhead line and 62,000 km of underground cable. Its role is to ensure a reliable, consistent and safe supply of electricity. Its area of operation covers 25,000 square kilometres.

Electricity North West distributes electricity through its network of 13,000 km of overhead lines, 43,000 km of underground cables and 38,000 transformers to around 2.4 million homes and businesses in the North West of England. Electricity North West is a significant contributor to the North West’s economy, employing 1,500 people with a significant research and development spend and a key role to play in enabling regional economic development.

Scottish & Southern Energy is responsible for around 128,000km of overhead lines and underground cables, distributing electricity to 3.5 million homes, offices and businesses in the north of Scotland and central, southern England. It plans to invest between £1.5bn and £1.7bn each year up to 2015 in areas including renewable energy, thermal generation and electricity networks.

ScottishPower Energy Networks owns and operates the electricity transmission and distribution network in the south of Scotland and the distribution network in Cheshire, Merseyside and North Wales. Its assets, which include 92,000 substations and around 111,000km of cables, transport electricity from the major power stations to around 3.5 million homes and business.

UK Power Networks own and operate 170,000 kilometres of underground cables and overhead lines and more than 130,000 substations in the South of England. UK Power Networks is owned by the Cheung Kong Group (CKG) which has a proven pedigree in running high-quality utility companies, and a track record of wise investment and long-term plans.  It already successfully operates electricity distribution businesses serving communities in Hong Kong, Australia and New Zealand.
